The first settlers of Powell arrived in 1801 and settled in the area. They were from the Middlebury, Connecticut area and decided to build a community in the area. In 1857, the town was renamed after Judge Thomas Powell. In 1861, the railroad came through the area, and the community grew in size. As a city, Powell is authorized to form a school district, but it continues to be affiliated with the Olentangy Local School District. The school district received the highest rating, “excellent with distinction.” For college students, there is Village Academy, a private college prep school.
Powell is a beautiful area of central Ohio, and is home to a historic downtown and many residential subdivisions. Powell has a variety of styles and sizes and is a desirable area outside of Columbus.
